What is Consciousness, what isn’t consciousness, how is it constructed, do we know what the fundamental components of consciousness are? The short answer is, no. There have been historically, many synonyms for consciousness; the mind, the spirit, the soul. The term consciousness hadn’t been coined until the 17th. century. The philosopher, John Locke, helped to popularize a marginal term and bring it into main stream usage. In the vein of evolutionary thought and current thinking regarding the concept of consciousness, we are in a distinctly ambivalent phase of understanding the architecture, the geography and the fundamental relationship it has with cognition, emotions, spirituality and self-identity.
One category is inclusive of the neuroscience-based theories. A dominant model is, the Global Workspace Theory. This model espouses the view that all sensory information is processed across multiple cognitive systems, [memory, attention, language, decision-making, reticular activating system] simultaneously, at a single moment. The integration and latticing of these networks become the conscious information that is then globally shared. This a very materialistic, and reductionistic assessment of the neural tissue electromagnetism, the bio-chemical interactivity, the thermodynamic qualities of neural vascularity, the charged ionic particles and this model become an integrated network of a foundational generative projection of what we singularly experience as a unified consciousness. This model of ‘projection’ is not dissimilar to what the ‘glow’ of a candlelight is when the wick has been ignited with fire. This model doesn’t really assign any concrete roots to a geographical space or any compositional matter to which this resultant projection becomes a representational mirror of physical reality. This consciousness model accounts for the experience of awareness as this global domination of sensory input.
Another widely held theory is the, Integrated Information Theory. This model again model’s consciousness as a resultant process of integrated sensory information and the resulting “whole” is the accumulated network of the brain’s architecture and the intrinsic, electro-magnetic, thermo-dynamic, charged ion channels and neural-synaptic charged electromagnetism. This model’s implicit hypothesis is the underlying complexities of the network create an explicit “awareness of consciousness.”
The range of measurements by various technological methods produces an in-depth understanding of the underlying neuro-anatomy, bio-chemistry and create a very wholly integrated “architectural” model of the neuro-physiology of the brain. There is no known bridge for this type of model to explain consciousness. As is necessary for all scientific pursuits the actual methodological approaches are preceded with a degree of philosophical propositions and then the construction of a theory and the execution of a methodology to test the theories. This is where some very intriguing, and extremely novel work is being explored both from the philosophical and the laboratory. The current science-based field of quantum field theory and the Quantum Electro-Dynamic theories are placing consciousness into the fabric of space-time itself. These philosophically based ideas are bridging the known field theory and QED with the architecture of the brain to hypothesize on the nature of the brain and its quantum coupling with the zero-point field. The theory that espouses that this coupling is existing internally at the neural synaptic level, is put forth quite eloquently by two distinguished men, Penrose, a mathematical physicist and Hameroff ,a M.D. Anesthesiologist. The basic theory is that within the microtubules of the neurons these protein structures act like a quantum computer. The structures are holding a state of super-positioning, when the threshold is reached for collapsing the microtubule collapses into a definite state. The networking of many collapsed microtubules is orchestrated by the networking of neural operations and causes the state of consciousness. The identification of the microtubule portion of the microcolumn is the hypothesis of this orchestrated reduction of the quantum super-positioning taking place in the zero-point-field. This has some real science behind this theory. The main proposition is that the brains anatomy and subsequent electromagnetic field integrates with the quantum field and causes this reduction in possibilities to a definite state. This process enables the individual their own respective consciousness.
In another model, bridging the new theoretical quantum field physics with the architectural physiology of the human brain is a peer-reviewed physicist by the name of, Joachim Keppler, unlike Penrose and Hameroff, Keppler’s theory is that the latticed network of neural electromagnetivity, is behaving like an antenna that is capable of both transmitting and receiving informational data from the vacuum zero-point field. Keppler has studied the neurotransmitter, glutamate, and has measured the electromagnetic oscillation frequency at 7.8 thz. This increased wave excitation integrates and a coupling mechanism takes place within a resonance and coherence of wave mechanics and field quantization. Kepplers, implicit hypothesis is quite remarkable. He believes that consciousness is a structural force implicit to time-space like gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces. The human consciousness is a resulting process of the the brain’s capacity to develop coherence with a dimension of the physical structures of the physical universe. This integration is the mechanism contributing to the ability to process a definite finite perception that can create individual consciousness and yield the stream of awareness.
The implications of this theoretical possibility stimulate the imagination into the realms of healing, time travel, transformation and restoration. The theoretical capacity to re-align to a default structure built into the physical structure of creation itself, and the body and soul of mankind as the bridge and fulcrum to the material and immaterial ,the finite and the infinite.
